The Dawson Public School offered a rigorous curriculum in the early 1900s. Matriculation examinations were set by Toronto University. School hours were often long, and students who responded well were moved ahead. English and Latin were emphasized.
In 1903 there were 466 children in nine Yukon schools, more than half of them in the Klondike. Besides the schools in Dawson itself, various settlements along the creeks had "Assisted Schools," requiring a minimum of five pupils, where the government paid only part of the teachers' salaries.
